Paw Prints Printing

Paw Prints is the UCCS pay-for-printing service that lets campus members print using OIT supported printers located throughout campus.  Print jobs can be sent from campus OIT Lab computers, online through the web, using the mobile app, and printing directly to printers or to a FindMePrinting queue which lets you release your print job where you want, when you want.

UPDATE:  November 2024 - Direct printing has been limited to printers where Find Me Printing is not supported.

Paw Prints is now on PaperCut!

Paw Prints runs on PaperCut for its managed print service, which can be used with Clyde’s Cash on your Lion OneCard and Mobile ID!  The new Paw Prints also offers Color Printing, Copying, and Scan to email.

About Paw Prints

Beginning Fall 2023 Paw Prints has moved to a print management platform called PaperCut!  This move brings exciting new features and integrations:

  1. Remote, mobile and web printing are now fully supported.
  2. Color printing, Copying, and Scan to email (in select locations).
  3. No more bills from the Bursars Office: Charges for printing will no longer appear on your student bill.
  4. Pay as you go with your Lion OneCard and Mobile ID: Charges for printing will now be deducted from your Clyde’s Cash account automatically.
    • Note: You must have a positive balance in your Clyde’s Cash account to print.

All current students, faculty, and staff are automatically enrolled into the Paw Prints system using their existing UCCS account.  New users automatically get a free $1.00 in their Paw Prints account to get started.

Campus departments also have the option to enroll into Paw Prints for their faculty, staff, and student employees.  Please contact the OIT Service Desk for more information.

Alumni and Public Patron printing is not supported at this time.

Charges for using the Paw Prints system are based on Single Sided vs. Double Sided, and Gray Scale vs Color.  These charges are the same whether you are printing or copying.  There is no charge for using the Scan to Email feature.  Charges will be drawn from the initial free $1.00 provided in PaperCut before drawing from your Clyde's Cash account.

Cost Table

TypeSimplex (single-sided)Duplex (double-sided)
Grayscale (Black and White)$0.08 per page$0.12 per page  ($0.06 per side)
Color$0.25 per page$0.50  ($0.25 per side)

  • Note:  All printers are configured for Gray Scale and Double-Sided printing by default.  These settings can be changed at print time from within most applications.  When color printing is selected, the color cost rate is only applied if any color is detected on the page.  See the section titled Printing Basics under How To Print below for more information.

Examples:

  • A print job with 3 pages, duplex, and grayscale = $0.06 + $0.06 + $0.08 = $0.20  (2 sheets of paper)
  • A print job with 3 pages, simplex, and grayscale = $0.08 + $0.08 + $0.08 = $0.24  (3 sheets of paper)
  • A print job with 3 pages, duplex, and color on the 3rd page = $0.06 + $0.06 + $0.25 = $0.37  (2 sheets of paper)
  • A print job with 3 pages, duplex, and color on the 2nd page = $0.06 + $0.25 + $0.08 = $0.39  (2 sheets of paper)

Paw Prints printers can be found throughout campus in OIT supported labs, classrooms, academic commons, Excel Learning Centers, and some building lobbies.  A virtual FindMePrinting queue is also available as the default printer for many locations.  Jobs sent to this queue are held and can only be released by walking up to one of the KM model printers and logging in.  More details on the FindMePrinting queue can be found below under How To Print.

Paw Prints is available on two models of Printers, Konica-Minolta Bizhub and HP LaserJet.

  • Note: Only Letter (ANSI, 8.5"x11") sized paper is supported with Paw Prints.  Print jobs formatted for other sizes will automatically be adjusted to fit on Letter sized paper.
  • Only standard quality plain white paper type is supported.  Please do not attempt to load your own custom paper into the printer trays as this will result in errors.
  • If you require specialized printing or copying using different paper sizes, colors, or types, please visit the UCCS Copy Center located in the Bookstore.  See UCCS Copy Center for more information.

Konica-Minolta Bizhub

Konica-Minolta printers support both direct printing and FindMePrinting, in both Black & White and Color, and Single-sided or Double-sided formats.  Copy and Scan to email is also available in the Library and Columbine Hall open lab.  These printers feature a touch-screen interface with Transact card reader that allows you to log into the PaperCut system to view and release print jobs sent to the FindMePrinting queue, and to choose additional functions for Copy and Scan where supported.

How to use:  Please see the sections below for instructions on How To Print.

HP LaserJet

HP LaserJet printers support printing directly in Black & White, in both Single-sided and Double-sided formats.  Color printing, FindMePrinting, and Copy-Scanning are not supported.  These printers are found in a limited number of computer classrooms and Excel centers and are configured as the default printer on those computers.

How to use:  Simply submit your print job to the printer, choose to accept the charges when prompted, and pick up your print job from the device.

All OIT Lab computers include a Desktop Client app which is required to interface with the PaperCut system for Paw Prints.  This client runs automatically after logging into the computer and will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.  Your current usable balance is displayed in the client, along with links to this website and the User Portal.

The balance shown is a combination of your free $1.00 initial Paw Prints balance plus any funds available to you through your Clyde's Cash account.  An icon is also displayed in the system tray on Windows computers for this application:

How To Print

The option to print is available in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, all major web browsers, and most applications available today.  To print from your application, look for a print icon or option menu.

For example, in Microsoft Word the print menu can be found by clicking on File from the top row of menu items.

Followed by Print.

From the Print Option menu, you are presented with options for which printer to print to, how many copies you would like to print, and which pages to print.  You can also select Printer Properties for the printer you have selected to access even more options, including Color versus Gray Scale printing.  (This will look different depending on the Application, some may have a button or link that only say Properties or Preferences.)

  • Note:  All printers are configured for Gray Scale and Double-Sided printing by default.  Only Konica-Minolta model printers support Color printing.
  • Note:  If your application does not have the option to access Printer Properties for Color Printing, save your work as a PDF or choose Microsoft Print to PDF as the Printer to use.  Once saved as a PDF file, you can open it Adobe Acrobat or another supported application and print from there.

In order to choose between Gray Scale and Color printing, click on the Printer Properties link under the print menu.  A new window will appear with additional settings specific to the printer you have selected.  For FindMePrinting with Konica-Minolta printers you will have the option to select Color Printing.  For best results, choose Auto Color.

  • Note:  When color printing is selected, the color cost rate is only applied if any color is detected on the page.  See the section titled What does it cost? above for more information.

Find Me Printing lets you submit a print job to a virtual print queue where it will be held until you are ready to release it at the printer of your choice. Simply send your job to the FindMePrinting queue then walk up to any supported Paw Prints printer and log in using the touchscreen with attached Transact card reader to print.

  • Note:  Jobs that are sent to the FindMePrinting queue are only held for 6 hours before automatically being deleted.
  • Printing charges are only applied when the job is released at the printer.  Deleted or expired jobs will not be charged.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. Print your document to the FindMePrinting printer.  Be sure to first configure your printing preferences such as Color or Gray Scale, Single Sided or Double Sided, which pages to print, and number of copies.

  2. Your print job will be sent to Paw Prints and after a few seconds a confirmation prompt will appear with details including the cost of the print job.
  1. Select Print to confirm and send to FindMePrinting, or Cancel to cancel the print job.
Note: You will also be able to cancel or modify your print job at the printer after logging in.

  2. Locate a Paw Prints supported printer and log into the touchscreen using your Username and Password or ID Number.

Releasing print jobs

Once signed in, you will be presented with options to release your print jobs held in the FindMePrinting queue.

  • Note: Depending on the model of printer you are at, you will either see a screen with three menu options, or you will be taken directly into the PaperCut Print release menu.  If you are taken to a generic Konica-Minolta menu you do not have any print jobs pending in the FindMePrinting queue.

If you do not see the above screen, skip to step 3 below.

  1. If you have print jobs held in the FindMePrinting queue, the number of print jobs pending and total pages will be visible at the top of the menu.  If you wish to print out all of your held jobs without any additional interaction, press the green Print All box.

Note: If the print jobs pending is not displayed, then there are no print jobs being held in your FindMePrinting queue.  Please verify you've submitted the job correctly and the timeout period has not elapsed.  Visit your Paw Prints user portal to view your held jobs and print history (see Access Your Paw Prints Account Online below for more information)

  2. If you want to view your full list of pending print jobs with more options, press the Print release box.  This will take you to the Print Release menu where you will see a list of pending print jobs ready for release.

  1. The Print Release screen will have a list of your pending print jobs with details on job properties and time of submission.  From here, you can select the check boxes to the left of the jobs you wish to print and release them by pressing the green Print box in the bottom right of the screen.  Alternatively, you can choose to delete jobs from the queue by pressing the Trash icon next to the Print button.

  2. If you wish to see additional details and options for a print job, press the right arrow button > located to the right of each job.
  1. From the print job details screen you can see more details including the final cost, can choose to delete the job, or print it.  From here you can also adjust the number of copies you wish to print.  To return to the Print release list, press the left arrow button < located in the upper left corner.

Logging Out

To log out of the PaperCut interface, press the Exit Icon located in the upper right corner next to your user name.

You will also be logged out automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity.

Direct Printing offers the option to send your print job directly to the printer, so that the job is released immediately without requiring additional input.  This is only offered in the Excel Learning Centers and Cent245 Lab where HP printers are located and do not support Find Me Printing.

How to Direct Print

  1. From within your application or document, select the option to print and then choose an available Paw prints printer from the list, as well as any other print options available under Preferences. When ready, click Print.

  2. Your print job will be sent to Paw Prints and after a few seconds a confirmation prompt will appear with details including the cost of the print job.

    • Note: This is your chance to review the print job and confirm or cancel before charges are applied to your account.

  3. Press Print to confirm your job and release it to the printer.

  4. Your print job will be printed immediately from the selected printer and charges will be applied automatically, please pick it up as soon as possible.

Copy and Scanning is only supported in the Kraemer Family Library 2nd floor computer commons area, and in the Columbine Hall 231 Open Computer Lab.

Copy

To use the copy feature, start by logging into the printer using the touchscreen.  (See the Find Me Printing section above for details on logging in).  From the main menu select the Device Functions button.

You will be presented with a Konica-Minolta menu screen with additional options.  Choose either Copy or Quick Copy from the menu to view the detailed copy menu.

Quick Copy

Konica-Minolta Quick Copy

The interface for the Copy and Quick Copy menus will be slightly different, but the functionality is essentially the same.

Load your originals on the top feeder, face up, and select your copy options such as number of copies, Color or Grayscale, and single-sided or double-sided.  Press the Copy button when you are ready to print.

  • Note:  Cost estimates will not be displayed on the printer screen before copying.

The cost of copying is based on number of pages, single sided vs double sided, and grayscale vs color.  Please see the Paw Prints Rate Sheet under the section titled What does it cost? for a complete breakdown of costs.  It is your responsibility to ensure you are selecting the correct Copy options and have enough funds in your Clyde’s Cash account to process your Copy job.  Details on your completed copy jobs and their costs can be found by logging into the Paw Prints user portal and selecting Recent Print Jobs from the menu.

Scan

Paw Prints only supports Scanning to your @uccs.edu E-mail address and scans will be emailed to you as a PDF attachment.  Most email systems have a maximum allowed attachment size of 20MB.  By default, PaperCut will block any scan larger than 20MB to prevent it from being rejected by the email system.  If you receive an error message indicating "Scan job exceeded max size", try breaking your scan job up into multiple smaller jobs.

To use the Scan feature, start by logging into the printer using the touch screen and then press the Scan button to open the Scan Settings menu.

From here you can choose to change the Subject of the email or the Filename of the PDF attachment.  Press the Settings button to open the Scan Settings menu for additional options as needed.  Load your documents onto the top feeder, face up, and press the green Start button on the screen when ready.  Once finished, an email will arrive in your inbox after a few minutes with the attachment containing your scan.  The Scan-to-Email service is provided free of charge and is only available for current Students, Faculty and Staff.

Web Printing allows you to print any document from your personal desktop or mobile device. You can print directly to a supported printer, or use Find Me Printing to pick it up when you're ready.  Web Printing only offers duplex (double-sided) printing at this time.

To Use Web Print:

  1. Log into your PawPrints account online by navigating to PaperCut for UCCS
  2. Sign in using your UCCS account credentials. (It is not necessary to include the '@uccs.edu' portion of the username)
  3. Once logged in, select Web Print from the left side menu
  4. From the Web Print page, select Submit a Job
  5. Select the desired printer (or FindMePrinting to hold job in PawPrints)
    • Press Print Options and Account Selection at the bottom of the page to continue.

Paw Prints no longer supports public patron printing.

If visitors to Campus have printing needs, they are encouraged to visit the UCCS Copy Center (located inside the UCCS Bookstore on the 1st floor of University Center) during their normal business hours (Monday- Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM). If visitors have printing needs after the Copy Center’s normal business hours, they may visit the University Center Information Desk (located on the 1st floor of the University Center) during their normal business hours (check website, as hours are subject to change).

Department print is also supported with the Paw Prints system.  Departments who elect to enroll can allow their members to use the Paw Prints services with charges being billed to the department speedtype instead of to the users individual account.

When a department member prints or copies using the Paw Prints system, they will be prompted to specify whether they wish the charges to be paid by their individual account or by their associated department account.

To request a department account or for more information, please contact the OIT Service Desk.

Common issues or errors can occur while using the Paw Prints print system. Please refer to common tasks or troubleshooting steps before contacting the Service Desk for help.

Print Delay

Your print jobs rely on communication with the Paw Prints server to provide popup notifications and send jobs correctly. Depending on where you are trying to print from and how the client works, it may take up to 60 seconds for print notifications and confirmation windows to appear. Do not attempt to close or reprint the job before being patient with the system.

Insufficient Funds

The Paw Prints print confirmation popup window will not inform you of insufficient funds for the print job. Once you press 'Print' on the Paw Prints Notification window, your job will be processed and cancelled automatically if your account has insufficient funds. Windows will notify you of this with a Toast Notification window in the bottom right corner, see screenshot below. Please review your account total and add additional funds, then reprint the document as needed.

No Print Notification Popup or Client Window

All OIT managed lab computers should automatically have the PaperCut client application running automatically. Without the client application running, print jobs cannot be processed by the Paw Prints system and you will not see any warnings or notifications that printing will not work correctly.

To verify the PaperCut client application is running, open the Windows taskbar applications to locate a green "P" icon or find the window on your Desktop:

To restart the PaperCut client application on any OIT lab computer, run the 'Connect to Printers' shortcut on your desktop:

Managing Your Paw Prints Account

All UCCS affiliated users will have a Paw Prints account created for them automatically. You should not need to access your account directly for real printing use cases, with account management and funding being done automatically for you within the system. However if you would like to update or review your account, follow the steps below:

  1. From a UCCS connected computer, navigate a browser to PaperCut for UCCS
  2. Enter your UCCS account credentials:
    • Note you do not need to enter '@uccs.edu' at the end of your username.
  3. From the Paw Prints web console, you can review items like your print history, pending release jobs, and access the Web Print feature.

Refunds may be issued for errors encountered during printing or copying that are determined to be caused by the Paw Prints devices or system. This includes issues with paper jamming, toner streaking, faded pages or other quality issues. Mistakes made at print time such as choosing the wrong number of copies, incorrect double-sided or single-sided format, or incorrect color options, will not be considered for a refund.  Please make sure to carefully review your printing preferences and PaperCut confirmation screens before submitting print jobs to avoid costly mistakes.

To request a refund for Paw Prints device errors:

  1. Bring any printed materials, including copy originals, to the OIT Service Desk or nearest Computer Assistance desk for review, and request to have a Paw Prints Refund ticket submitted.
  2. Include your full name, UCCS username, date and time, and cost of the job in error.
  3. You may be asked to log into the Paw Prints user portal to view the print history in order to verify the costs.
  4. Refunds will be applied as a credit onto your Paw Prints PaperCut balance and are not cash deposits back into your Clyde’s Cash account.

Paw Prints accounts are automatically linked to your Clyde's Cash account if you have enrolled in Clyde's Cash.  To add funds for printing, simply add funds to your Clyde's Cash account.

Please visit the Lion OneCard Website for more information on Clyde's Cash and the Lion OneCard.
